Presidents

Represent everyone. Without doing it all yourself.

Being president should not mean carrying every answer in your head. Understand residents’ concerns, prepare items with the property manager and review decisions. Represent your community with information and support.

Your property manager supports you at every step.

One proposal, different questions

Listen before deciding.

Each resident sees the same proposal from their own situation. Collecting questions before the meeting helps fill information gaps and sometimes improve the proposal before voting.

In the pilot, residents’ contributions led to three agenda items being revised before voting.

Lead with everything prepared

More context to represent everyone. More support to decide.

Explain what is proposed and why

Share the proposal, its reasons and documents. Residents read them before the meeting, at their pace and in their language.

Understand questions before deciding

Collect questions and comments that reveal what needs reviewing in a proposal.

Rely on your property manager

Questions needing professional judgement go to the practice. You make room for contributions without taking on all the preparation.

Return to what was agreed

Check what was agreed and where it is recorded, and review the draft with the manager before signing. A change of president need not mean starting from scratch.

Listen before moderating

Behind an angry resident is often someone who wants to be heard.

Giving questions a channel, time and written answers changes the tone of the meeting. Representing does not mean carrying everything: it means listening, organising and deciding with the support of information and your practice.

An example to picture it

One proposal, different views.

01

Listen to the questions

One resident asks about pushchair access; another about what the entrance quote includes.

02

Prepare the explanation

Bring those questions to the manager and complete the item’s information before voting.

03

Review the decision

Check that the draft minutes reflect the resolution as it was reached at the meeting.

Let’s explore it together

Let’s start with your next meeting.

Choose an item that is hard to prepare. We’ll see how to share the proposal, collect questions and review the resolution with your property manager.
